Cable Schmable! How to cut your TV Costs: Pros, Cons and the Bottom Line

living cable free

Since December 2012 our house has been cable free.

We have survived!

We haven't killed each other!

  • Cheaper than Cable
  • Watch what we want when we want
  • Catch up on your favorite series
  • Pay for what you want (within reason)
  • Less commercials (or none in some cases) than TV

  • No HBO! or TNT.
  • All series shows are available the day after they air
  • Need another device to watch on TV
  • Forget about Sunday/Monday night football (unless you have an antennae)
  • There is no Science and History channels for my husband.

To save about $100/mo my husband and I decided to cut cable out of our house and use our Wii to watch streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.  Here is the low down on costs and what you need to watch streaming TV on your television.  Tomorrow I will break down devices that I use and subscription costs.

Bottom line(s):

  • I am able to keep the family relatively happy with out cable through internet streaming services.
  • Our monthly costs have been reduced by over $100/month
  • If cable channels like TNT and HBO do not start offering their programing a la carte soon, then I will get cable again - just so I can see some of my favorite shows (Rizolli & Isles, Major Crimes, Perception, Game of Thrones, and True Blood) but I won't have a problem shutting it back down when those series are not on.

Today I am participating in the following blog hops/link ups:  The Bloglovin' Collective, Thumping Thursdays,  Bloglovin' Blog Hop, Linkin' With My Ladies

  1. Not a bad idea. Although my husband would kill me if we didn't have TNT during the NBA finals! Stopping by from Thumping Thursday hop. Hope you can visit sometime:

    1. Ooo .. I forgot TNT did that, but yeah - it would be a lot for a sports lover to give up.

  2. I cut my cable last year and my kids flipped! But then a month later, no complaints. We watch netflix and love it. Not only that, we watch less TV, play more and I save $120 a month!

    1. Exactly!! It is just another way of life to get used to, and often it is for the better :-D

  3. We are always wanting to save money, but cable is still in the budget; however, our yard looks like crap since we dropped the weed service. It had weeds with the service, but now it's horrible. We watch our cable while our neighbors probably turn their noses up at our lawn. Budgeting sucks.

    1. Joyce, we cut the landscaping too a few years back. We have gotten used to our less than perfect lawn - to hell with the neighbors! :-D

I agree Budgeting Sucks - but peace of mind is priceless!!

I am headed over to check out your blog, can't wait to see it!

  4. We have cable, but I very rarely use it... I mean, unless How I Met Your Mother is on.

    1. Hehe - check and see if you can watch that on Hulu ... if you can then WOOT you can save tons of moolah!

  5. Aloha hun! Following you via GFC, Bloglovin, and FB (my id is valeria arizzi).
Hope you'll stop by and return the love!
