Defiance - Revolutionary Television and Gaming

defiance syfy tv shoe
Defiance - a Syfy Original Series.  Mondays at 9/8 Central
This will not be my only post about this show - there are so many things to talk about with this show that it will simply take more than one post to cover everything with out boring you guys out of your mind :-)  That and I believe in:  One topic per post which I will write more about at a later date.

The very first thing I want to say is:  If you like science fiction adventure, if you enjoyed Babylon 5, or Battlestar Galactica, even Star Wars or other science fiction of the sort - then this is the show for you.  I don't compare this series to Star Trek - albeit a legend - I find Star Trek to be the clean cut older brother of Scifi, not the glitzy down and dirty science fiction that these show/movies posses.

I did say this was revolutionary didn't I?  Science fiction is science fiction, correct?  What makes this so special?  If you are versed in the gaming world, then you may already know.  This will be the first time in history that a television show and an MMO game are released in tandem (not one before the other, and not one about the other)

Deficance, television and gaming history
Defiance, the show by Syfy channel and the game by Trion Worlds
The game is a first person shooter (FPS)(**incorrect - see comment - this is a Third person game), where you see the world through your character's eyes as opposed to seeing your character in the world,  massive multi-player online (MMO) role playing game (RPG).  So for those alphabet soup people, that would make this an FPSMMORPG.  This was also released across all gaming platforms (except for Wii, I think), which can make the PC experience a little clunky, but that conversation is for another time. :-)  I have not played it yet, as I am not a fan of FPS (the others I love), but after seeing the show I am considering it.

I digress - here is what make this so intriguing.  While the show is based out of what used to be St. Louis (see the busted up arch), the game is based in what used to be San Francisco (I am sure you recognize that bridge); but the gaming world is persistent - and has the potential to affect the show, or be affected by the show.
deciance where the trion worlds game meets the syfy orginal series
Defiance, where the game meets the show
For example, the opening scene from the show you see in the show where the two main characters are racing across the countryside, and also there is a piece that is taken from Nolan (above) where he states, "You don't know what I had to go through to get that." Or something of the sort.  Well - the thing is, he stole it from you - your character anyway.  There is a quest line (a story line, which is the main quest line) where this happens.  He and Irisa (also above) race away from you and end up in the show.

Syfy Channel has dedicated a page describing where Defiance the Game meets Defiance the Show  including some stuff you have already run into on the show, which is the celebration of Armistice Festival and the feared Volge.  The potential is huge, and I can't wait to see the ways in which they get these two mediums to work together.

So if you are a fan of science fiction adventure, make sure you check out the show on the Syfy Channel tonight at 9/8 Central.  Gamers pick up the game where you normally do or find it at Trion Worlds.  A little off-topic, but Trion Worlds is the same group that make one of my favorite games, Rift.  They are one of the few companies out there there understand the gaming world from the gamer's point of view as opposed to the corporate point of view.

  1. Nice review so far! Only things I have to say are;

    1. There have been other shows/movies to be released in tandem with a game. It's just the first to be released beside/with an MMO. ^^

    2. It's actually a 3rd person shooter not 1st person shooter.

Anyway, love this show a lot already and only the pilot has been aired. Can't wait for the rest!

    1. Why Anon? :-)

You are correct! I think I may have explained myself incorrectly, or I could flat out be wrong, but most games released at the same time as another medium (usually movies) are an RPG where you can play one of your favorite characters (or not) but you are working on a set of rules already designed by the book/movie (I am thinking of things like the Harry Potter games) You are right this is the first MMO as opposed to an RPG - I was thinking of the dynamic, and did not explain my thoughts well - I was trying to be succinct :-D I really should know better than that (my co-guild leader in Rift is always catching me on this - lol)

      2. Reeeaaalllllyyyy??? I had been told a couple of times that it was an FPS game - but I haven't played it, which is why I didn't go much deeper other than the one quest that someone else told me about. This just peaked my interest in the game about 75% higher than it was - I just really suck at FPS, I am always forgetting there is a 'behind me' or that I can step in things for that matter. :-D

Thanks for the input! I learn something new every day, and I love it that way. I agree, I was extremely impressed with the pilot, which usually ends up with canned acting - only one character was a little off for me, that was Rave - the guy is a good stoic actor, he just did not do the high intensity moments well for me.
